Self care

Self care, a buzzword that is often heard and promoted.

But what does it actually mean?

Bubble baths, pizza, face masks, charcuterie boards, crystals, long walks?

These things are a part of self care in enjoying your life and finding joy - hooray, sign me up!

B u t it is not the full picture of what self care entails and includes.

The reality is, self-care is sometimes dark and unglamorous stuff.

It’s about unpacking all that baggage you’ve accrued through life.

It’s about drawing boundaries even if it means walking away from what was always comfortable and known.

It’s about looking at finances and doing the adult work of budgeting, saving and organizing.

It’s about challenging and breaking limiting belief systems you have about yourself.

It’s about looking at your physical health and body in eating well and exercising.

It’s about the continuation of learning (and unlearning) and to be humbled by all there is to know in this world.

It’s about challenging your own status quo and to move out of comfort zones.

It’s about saying no, so you can say yes to yourself.

Absolutely, we should always enjoy our lives and drink in all the wonderful things that help us move above the line when we feel stressed, disappointed, lost, confused, and sad. And there are some days where this is exactly the kind of love that we need to gift ourselves with.

But it would be foolish to ignore the hard and heavy work that is also included in self-care. I like to think of self care as excavating space to grow into and the excavation may take everything that we have and to muster up all the kindle we can to spark and rocket ourselves to new heights [see blog post on tapas]. As we embark into the more unglamorous side of self care, we will wake up early when we really don’t feel like it. We will take care of the thing that we always pushed to next week, next month, maybe next year. We will show up for class when life is at its peak crazy. We will prioritize ourselves knowing that we are creating the space for all the things that our heart and soul has dreamed of and asked for.

As we approach the end of the year, we will find ourselves standing at a threshold passageway.

What will you decide to bring through and what will you decide to lovingly let go?
